    SYMPTOMS OF A HEARING LOSS

If you answer 'Yes' to any of these questions, you may have a hearing loss

1:  Do you find conversation in restaurants or crowded places difficult?
2:  Do you often have to turn up the volume of the TV, radio or phone?
3:  Do you find that people speak softly or mumble?
4:  Do people complain that you ask them to repeat?
5:  Do you have to look at people's faces to understand  what has been said?
6:  Have you noticed that everyday sounds, like birds singing, clocks ticking, etc.?

THE CAUSES OF A HEARING LOSS

In the United Kingdom there are around nine million deaf and hard of hearing people and it is a major public health issue that is the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. There are many reasons for this, of which they can either be congenital, meaning before birth, or acquired, meaning after birth.  There are many reasons for your hearing to deteriorate, these are the main ones, but the others would include viral and bacterial infections, medical conditions that affect the body, etc.

    Age (Presbyacusis)

This is the most common cause of hearing loss, with around 6.5 million of those deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK being aged over 60.

Hearing loss is an invisible condition; we cannot see hearing loss, only its effects and because the presence of a hearing loss is not visible, these effects may be attributed to aloofness, confusion, or personality changes.
Hearing loss due to ageing is a natural process called Presbyacusis and can not be stopped, there are changes in the inner ear that happen as you get older cause a slow but steady hearing loss. Hearing aids can be a great help to those who have hearing problems due to age.
Many people begin to lose a small amount of their hearing from around 40 years of age, this hearing loss increases as you get older, so by the age of 80, most people have significant hearing problems.
As your hearing starts to deteriorate, high-frequency sounds, such as female or children’s voices, may become difficult to hear. It may also be harder to hear consonants such as "s", "f" and "th". This can make understanding speech in background noise very difficult

    Noise Exposure

Every day, we experience sounds and normally these sounds are at safe levels that don’t damage our hearing. But sounds can be harmful when they are too loud, even for a brief time, or when they are both loud and long-lasting. These sounds can damage sensitive structures in the inner ear and cause noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
NIHL can be immediate or it can take a long time to be noticeable. It can be temporary or permanent, and it can affect one or both ears. Even if you can’t tell that you are damaging your hearing, you could have trouble hearing in the future, such as not being able to understand other people when they talk, especially on the phone or in a noisy room. Regardless of how it might affect you, one thing is certain: noise-induced hearing loss is something you can prevent.
Exposure to harmful noise can happen at any age and is dependent on both the level of noise and the length of the exposure, though even short exposure can sometimes cause hearing loss. The effects are unlikely to take consequence until later life, and symptoms are likely to go unnoticed. People of all ages, including children, teens, young adults, and older people, can develop NIHL.

    Other Causes

    • Childhood Ailments - Mumps, Measles
    • Health Issues - Diabetes, linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke and obesity
    • Genetics
    • Injury
    • Earwax
    • Infections / Diseases
    • Ototoxicity
In older people, a hearing loss is often confused with, or complicates, such conditions as dementia.  It is said that depending on the degree of loss - mild to severe you are either twice to five times more likely to develop Dementia.

Recently approved CLEARWAX ear wax removal specialist in Cardiff , South Glamorgan who has been ENT-trained to perform endoscopic ear wax removal, including E-suction™, to safely clean and clear your blocked ear. Unlike ear syringing and irrigation which attempts to flush out ear wax blindly by pumping water in your ear, E-suction™ gently vacuums ear wax out of the ear under direct vision using our specially developed iCLEARscope™ endoscope. This method of visualising the ear wax with an endoscope whilst removing it was clinically found to be quicker, more comfortable and easier to perform compared to an operating microscope commonly used for microsuction.
